Maybe people don’t think journalists are liars and cheats

Having just returned from the delightful Harrow, where I was doing Vox Pops about how people regard journalists today, I realise that maybe people don’t think that journalists and we future journalists are all liars and cheats. I was half expecting people to be shouting at me, saying they hated journalists and they are all cheating, privacy invading liars. Even when mentioning the phone tapping scandal, it seemed that the majority of people I spoke too were not too bothered about how Coulson and the News of the World journalists acted.

However, most people thought that journalists were more lazy than deceitful, just accepting what was said in a press release and typing it up, rather than fully investigating stories. There was also a feeling that the reliance upon social media, such as Twitter, was too high.

This has made my three-minute podcast much more difficult now, with the emphasis now having to change from cheating journalists to lazy journalists. Always nice to know what the public truly think about your future career…
