Goodbye to a sitcom that has filled so many hours of my life

I read some devastating news in The Sun today. No… it’s not the story of the fox that got stuck on the top of London’s tallest building… it was the devastating news that Two and a Half Men has been cut by its American TV network CBS, due to Charlie Sheen’s recent personal issues and a bust up with creator Chuck Lorre, calling him “a contaminated little maggot”.

I can’t explain how many hours of my life I have spent watching Charlie Sheen and John Cryer playing the Harper brothers on the series which has been advertised as “America’s biggest comedy”.  Sheen was reportedly being paid £1.2 million an episode for his role as Charlie Harper, an alcoholic, middle-aged party-boy, who is a serial womaniser… Is that much different from himself? He is just really being paid to display his life as a spectacle.

No matter what people and critics say, I like Two and a Half Men. It is ‘Marmite television’… you either love it or you hate it. As a fan, I will defend it’s credibility as one of the best comedies of the twenty-first century.

However, I believe that John Cryer’s performance as the neurotic Alan is much superior to that of Sheen’s performance as Charlie. Alan is quirky and is the everyman underdog. I think I just relate to him more, as I have been compared to him! His performance outshines the much more high-profile Sheen.

Two and a Half Men will be sorely missed in my life, so it looks like I’m going to have to find a new show to follow.
